New York weather, explained

How to read the New York forecast

A good forecast is really three views at once. The current panel tells you what it feels like outside right now — critical before stepping onto a Manhattan sidewalk. The hourly strip is for planning your day: when the rain band arrives, when the wind picks up, when it warms up enough for that lunchtime walk in Central Park. The seven-day outlook is for the week ahead, most reliable in the first three or four days. Read it top to bottom and you'll have what you need.

New York weather and the seasons

New York has four genuine seasons, each dramatically different. Summers are hot and humid, with heat indices regularly pushing past 38°C and afternoon thunderstorms common. Falls are spectacular, with crisp air and brilliant foliage from October. Winters bring real cold — snow, ice, and wind chills below -10°C are part of city life. Spring is variable, swinging between warm, clear days and late-season nor'easters. The Atlantic Ocean moderates temperatures somewhat but the urban heat island keeps the city warmer than surrounding areas overnight.

What the wind chill means in New York

In winter, the temperature you see is not the temperature you feel. Wind chill — the effect of cold air moving over skin — can make a 0°C day feel like -12°C on an exposed midtown corner. The Hudson River funnels cold north winds down the West Side, making waterfront neighborhoods noticeably colder. The East Side is often a degree or two warmer, sheltered from the prevailing westerlies. On summer days, the inverse effect applies: the humidity makes heat indices well above the thermometer reading, which is when air conditioning earns its keep.
